Meet Henry Chung DeYoung, a scholar, diplomat, writer, and unsung hero. Arriving in 1905 as a penniless 14-year-old who couldn't speak English, he was almost lost to history until Dosan Ahn Chang Ho convinced him to stay and fight.
From becoming his high school valedictorian in Nebraska to helping establish a Korean Military Academy in the Midwest, Henry was a true pioneer. He worked alongside every major leader from Dosan Ahn Chang Ho to Philip Jaisohn, serving as an emissary, an ambassador to Japan, and even helping draft the first Constitution of the Republic of Korea.
But perhaps his most enduring legacy is his camera. Over 75 years, Henry meticulously documented the early Korean-American experience. Today, the Henry C. DeYoung Archive stands as one of the most important collections of our history, correcting the record and preserving the sacrifices of the early diaspora.
